Can Oatmeal Make You Lose Weight?
The simple answer is YES. (Avoid the over-sweetened varieties. Look at the calories, sugar content and ingredients on the label. Look for whole grain rolled oats, lightly flavored, lightly sweetened and plain good-old-fashioned varieties. These come in quick microwave packets, too.) Eating a high-fiber diet, rich in whole grains (like oatmeal), vegetables and fruits helps you feel full. When you don’t feel hungry, you are much less likely to crave all those yummy treats that have caused you to put the weight on in the first place! Any time you look for cereal, hot or cold, read the label. The higher the fiber content, the fuller you will feel eating one serving, and the longer you will feel full!
Vegetable Diet to Lose Weight
A modified vegetarian diet has really helped me lose weight, quickly at first, then steadily and consistently over months. I base meals on beans dishes that contain large amounts of actual fruits and vegetables and eat appropriate portion sizes of whole grain breads with meals. I still eat eggs, especially in casseroles and baked goods. Eating a high-fiber diet keeps me satisfied instead of hungry, and making my own food really helps me keep all my calories coming from the right place!
The most important item I have eliminated from my diet is cheese. The high fat content in cheese can really sneak up on you! I only use low fat and nonfat dairy products.
A Sweet Treat for Your Diet
Looking for sweet treats? Try some healthy main or side dishes that are sweet because they contain naturally sweet ingredients. I find this satisfies my sweet tooth and keeps me from craving higher calorie and lower nutrition alternatives.
One of my favorites is probably the simplest dish I make: sweet potatoes and apples. Sweet potatoes are very high in fiber and full of nutrients – much better for you than white potatoes! (It takes a while because of the baking times, but the actual time you spend “slicing and dicing” is less than 20 minutes.) Make as much as you like: the ratio is 3-4 medium sweet potatoes to 2 medium apples. (Choose crisp, juicy, apples.) Bake sweet potatoes at 400º for about 40 minutes and let them cool for a while. At this point the skin will come off easily. Slice the sweet potatoes and the apples and put them in a covered baking dish in shallow layers. Cover the dish and bake at 325º for another 45 minutes or so, increasing the time if you used more than 3 sweet potatoes. At this point, everything should be soft and easy to stir together. I use this as both a side dish with omelets and a main dish with a savory bean salad on the side. Serve and enjoy!
